Got a client in Hong Kong on his second honeymoon? Or is a customer going to be here to sign a huge contract? Or do you simply want to do something memorable?

Whatever the reason, travel agents in Hong Kong are finding the half-hour whirl over the Fragrant Harbour in a helicopter followed by lunch or dinner in one of the famed restaurants at The Peninsula, repeatedly voted the world's best hotel, is a favourite item on executive agendas.

The Peninsula has a helipad on its roof, which leads down to the exclusive, aviation- themed Clipper Lounge. This celebrates the history and romance of early trans-Pacific flights including the pioneering PanAm flying ship Clippers.

Today, the trip over Hong Kong is made in a sleek five-seat Aerospatiale twin engine Squirrel helicopter. I stepped aboard at the Central Heliport on Hong Kong Island, close to Admiralty. The captain gave brief safety instructions and informed us of the flight plan. The helicopter rose slowly, gently tilted and took off over the harbour.

Excitement? The cliffs of glass and steel skyscrapers of Hong Kong's spectacular financial district were on one side, then suddenly we were over The Peak and heading above the beaches along the southern coast of the Island. Stanley and Repulse Bay passed under us, then panoramic views of Aberdeen. On Lantao, we paid aerial homage to the giant Buddha statue that peers benignly from a peak that is difficult to reach on foot.

The 30 minutes seemed to fly past. The helicopter swung back and headed down over the crammed streets of Kowloon towards the hotel helipad.

A quick stop at the China Clipper gave a fascinating glimpse into the old days of aviation.

The thrill is over, but the rest of the expedition promises sustenance. The package can be put together in many ways. Agents may book clients merely for the 30-minute helicopter ride and opt for a lunch or dinner experience in one of The Peninsula's celebrated restaurants. Package prices range from US$699, or HK$5440, for two people to US$1,260, HK$9,800, for four.

You could decide to take off or land at the Peninsula or the Central Heliport. However, these special packages are not available on public holidays and you need to make reservations in advance. Bring lots of film.
